A Clinical Study about the Antimanic Effects of the Tegretol-CR

Abstract
To evaluate the antimanic effects of the Tegretol-CR, authors selected 10--admitted bipolar mania patients and treated with Tegretol-CR (CBZ-CR). Clinical effects were evaluated with Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and-Peterson¢¥s Rating Scale for Mania (PRSM). Toxic and side effects were evaluated by CBC, liver function test, platelet count, EKG and clinical observation.
The results were summarized as¢¥ follow.
1. Total score of the BPRS began to decrease after 2 weeks of treatment: Total score of PRSM began to decrease after 1 week of treatment (P< 0.01). Both of them continued to decrease during 6 weeks of treatment.
2. The mean CBZ-CR dosage was 1036mg, and the mean plasma concentration of CBZ-CR was 7.64,ug / ml at 6 weeks of treatment.
3. Among 10 patients, 8 patients showed clinical improvement and could be discharged from the ward in 9 weeks of treatment.
4. Transient decrease of white blood cells in 2 patients and transient decrease of platelet count in 1 patient appeared. But they were recovered without specific measures. 4 patients showed dry mouth, nausea and general weakness, but they were not severe as to discontinue the medication.
